Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 Review
First off, let me say that I’ve used the Tiger Wall UL2 for over a year. During that time, it’s been my go-to tent when I want to lower my base-weight and will be able to use a semi-freestanding tent.
If you are not sure what I mean by the terms base-weight, semi-freestanding, check out those articles to get yourself up to speed. In the meantime, let me tell you about the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 tent.
Ultralight
UL2 stands for an ultralight 2-person tent. Pretty straight forward! What determines an ultralight tent? In most cases, ultralight tents range in weight from 2-3 pounds, which includes poles, stakes, rainfly, and stuff sacks.
The Tiger Wall UL2 packed weight comes in at a meager 2.46 pounds (1,117 grams). Also, it packs down to 5 x 18 inches (6.57 liters). Therefore, it takes up very little space in your backpack, which means I’ll use my Granite Gear Crown2 38 pack if I don’t need to bring a bear canister
2 Doors & 2 Vestibules
I love the fact that the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 has two doors. Of course, the zipper for the second door is extra weight, but I’m more than willing to lug those extra grams around so that I don’t have to crawl over my dog or wife to get out of the tent.
Each door has a vestibule with 8 square feet of sheltered area in each vestibule. For me, the vestibules are a great place to store my backpack, shoes, and other gear I don’t need quick access to inside the tent. Another nice feature is the double sliders on the vestibule zippers. This way, you can create additional venting from either the top or the bottom.
Liveability
Using a single-pole architecture, the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 provides a ton of livable area inside the tent. The pole is a “Y” at your head, which creates an ample space above your head. That way, when you sit up, your head doesn’t touch the mesh. The ample space above your head is a plus when you are a tall person like myself.
Also, the cross pole is moved forward on the tent, which makes the side walls almost vertical. The vertical sidewalls are nice because if you are sleeping with another person in the Tiger Wall UL2, you can naturally sit up, and your shoulders don’t touch the mesh walls.
Finally, the last detail for liveable space is the structured corners at your feet. Big Agnes has cleverly designed an ultralight solution to provide more space for your feet so that they don’t rub up against the tent walls and get damp from condensation.
If you are only comparing stats between tents, you can easily overlook the structured foot corners, but it does make the tent more liveable. With the floor at only 86 inches long, it feels much more significant.
Organization
The Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 has lots of handy storage and organization options. Located at the top of the tent is the ceiling pocket, which is perfect for hats, lightweight gloves, or water bottles.
Next to the doors are mesh pockets to hold items you need quick access to like a headlamp. Furthermore, above your head is the large rectangular pocket with cord ports in the corners for your earbuds or other cables.
In addition to the mesh pockets, there are also loops at the top of the Tiger Wall. The loops are nice because you can string a line through them and hang stuff. Or, you can purchase the triangle, trapezoid, and wall gear lofts that attach easily to the organization loops.
Dislikes
The only downside to the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 is the width of the floor area. At your head, it’s 52 inches wide, and at your feet, it’s 42 inches. What this means is that you would not be able to place two 25 inch wide rectangle sleeping pads like the Big Agnes Insulated AXL side-by-side. Instead, you would have to use two mummy-style sleeping pads like the Thermarest NeoAir UberLite. Other than that, I don’t have any gripes.
Fit and Sizing
The Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 fits me very well. I’m 6’2” tall, and with the tent floor-length being 86 inches long. But what makes it work is the structured corners at your feet. They really open up the area. Even with the width being 52” at the head and 42” at the feet, the vertical walls make it feel very roomy. That way, you can move naturally in the tent without brushing against the mesh walls.
