Big Agnes Mystic Review
Last summer and fall, I was able to use the Big Agnes Mystic sleeping bag on multiple backpacking trips to the Uintas (the only East-West mountain range in the USA), and to Moab. You may ask, why use a 15° bag in the summer or fall? Well, at 10,500 feet and with a late summer cold snap, a warmer bag was needed to sleep comfortably. I don’t like to shiver while sleeping! Who does?
I used the 15° option of the Big Agnes sleeping bag, which has 850 fill-power RDS DownTek down. What does all this mean, and why should you care? Fill-power is the loft of the down. Therefore, 700 fill-power will require more down to achieve the same insulation value as 850 fill-power down.
Compressibility
With less down, the Mystic compresses into a smaller stuff sack and takes up less room in your backpack. In contrast, a 700 fill-power down or synthetic sleeping will take up more space.
Be careful, when down gets wet, it loses its warmth, but down’s weight-to-warmth and compressibility are why so many backpackers choose down.
In addition to compressing into a smaller stuff sack, down is also lighter than synthetic insulation. Due to these characteristics, you can downsize your pack and carry a lighter load on your next adventure. For example, I’m able to compress the Big Agnes Mystic sleeping bag into an 8L stuff sack easily, so it doesn’t take up a lot of room.
DownTek
What is DownTek? It’s a coating that is applied to the down to make it water-resistant. Therefore, if you are sleeping in a single-wall tent and get condensation on your sleeping bag, it will help maintain its thermal properties and will dry quicker while retaining its loft.
RDS
What is RDS down, and why should you care? RDS means that the down used in the Big Agnes Mystic sleeping bag is Responsible Down Standards certified. That means that the down is sourced from ethical practices and is not live-plucked from geese.

Big Agnes Mystic Sleeping Bag Features
One of the bests features of the Big Agnes Mystic sleeping bag is the FlexPad Sleeve design. The FlexPad Sleeve design enables the sleeping bag to fit around your sleeping pad so that when you roll around while sleeping, the sleeping bag stays centered on your pad.
In case you didn’t know, insulation loses its thermal properties when it’s compressed. Therefore, by using Big Agnes’ Flex Pad Sleeve design, they can save weight by eliminating the down beneath you since the bag stays centered on your sleeping pad.
If you are using the Mystic in the shoulder seasons when the ground can be cold, you’ll want to pair the sleeping bag with an insulated camping sleeping pad. Otherwise, you could get cold.
Have you ever woken up in the morning during a camping trip, and your cell phone battery has died due to the cold? To address this matter, the Big Agnes Mystic sleeping bag has a cell phone pocket inside the sleeping bag. That way, the battery doesn’t drain due to the cold.
The last thoughtful addition to the Big Agnes Mystic sleeping bag is the pillow sleeve. The pillow sleeve helps keep your pillow in place while you sleep at night.
Dislikes
If you are a weight-weenie gram counter, this may not be the sleeping bag for you due to the additional features like the FlexPad Sleeve and full-length zipper. However, if you want a fully-featured light-weight sleeping bag, the Big Agnes Mystic sleeping is just the ticket.
Who is the Big Agnes Mystic sleeping bag for?
